Where it Began: Following my Passion

The journey of Novel Nosh began when I was in college nearly 25 years ago, when a simple book club gathering sparked what would become a lifelong passion project. As a young college student hosting a discussion of Alice Sebold’s haunting novel “The Lovely Bones,” I found myself drawn to create a culinary experience that would complement our literary conversation. The book, told from the perspective of a murdered girl watching her family and community from the afterlife, contained a vivid description of someone digging into frozen ground. This image inspired me to serve crème brûlée, creating a sensory parallel between breaking through the dessert’s hardened sugar crust and the book’s evocative imagery of disturbing frozen earth. This moment marked my first deliberate pairing of literature and cuisine.

Growing up

Books and food have always been central to my identity. Growing up with a mother who worked in a bookstore, I was surrounded by stories from an early age. Simultaneously, I developed a passion for cooking. Spending countless hours absorbing culinary knowledge from Food Network shows in my late teens. These twin interests continued to intertwine throughout my life. Manifesting in my reading choices. Novels like “Bread Alone” and Jenny Colgan’s “Little Beach Street Bakery” series became comfort reads. They were the literary equivalent of soul food that I’d return to during stressful times or when I needed a “palate cleanser.” These food-centered narratives provided both emotional nourishment and culinary inspiration, further cementing the connection between what I read and what I ate.

Social Media

The advent of social media provided a new outlet for this passion. When Instagram became popular, I created an account called “Novel and Nosh” dedicated to pairing books with complementary foods. I would arrange flat-lay photographs featuring my current read alongside a themed dish or drink. One memorable pairing included the post-apocalyptic thriller “Bird Box” with A Shot in the Dark cocktail from Mix Shake Stir. The moody beverage perfectly capturing the book’s ominous atmosphere. While my photography skills weren’t professional quality, these creative exercises kept reinforcing the potential of combining literary and culinary experiences.

After years of this passion project gently “niggling” at me, I’ve decided to fully embrace it by launching a podcast. Approaching fifty years old, I’ve recognized the importance of following genuine passions rather than letting them remain unexplored. The podcast represents a natural evolution, combining my love of books and food with my enjoyment of the podcasting medium.

Though the exact journey of Novel Nosh remains to be determined, I’m committed to exploring the rich intersection between what we read and what we eat. This space, where stories and sustenance meet, feels like home to me, and I’m eager to build a community of like-minded individuals who find joy in both literary and culinary adventures. Whether through discussing food-themed books, creating recipes inspired by literary scenes, or simply celebrating the complementary pleasures of reading with the perfect snack in hand, Novel Nosh aims to nourish both mind and body. I invite fellow book lovers and food enthusiasts to join me on this journey: to subscribe to the podcast, connect through social media, and participate in the conversation about how stories can be enhanced through our sense of taste. After all, both books and food have the remarkable ability to transport us, comfort us, and bring us together.
