Book & Snack Pairing: Behind Closed Doors + Trader Joe’s Hot Honey Popcorn

A Novel & Nosh Book and Food Pairing
This summer, I’ve been trying to slow down and really savor this season because a lot of change is coming. My oldest is home for the last time before he moves into his own apartment in the fall. My middle son just graduated high school and heads off to college in early August. And my daughter, who has some medical things we’ve been navigating, will be homeschooled again this year so she can prioritize the sleep her body needs.
So yes, big transitions all around. Which is exactly why I found myself picking up a deliciously easy, can’t-put-it-down thriller.
The Book: Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris
If you haven’t read this one yet and you love a fast, gripping popcorn thriller, this is your sign to pick it up.
Behind Closed Doors came out in 2016, and I’ll be honest: it had been sitting on my shelf for a while. I’ve been in a bit of a reading lull lately, not because the books I’m reading have been bad, I’m just not reading as much right now. But I picked this one up and read it in 24 hours. I could not stop.
Here’s what you need to know (no spoilers, I promise):
- Under 300 pages — perfect for a weekend or a beach day
- Dual timeline structure — each chapter alternates between past and present, and the two timelines converge in a really satisfying way
- Female main character navigating a seemingly perfect marriage
- The central question of the book: what is actually happening behind closed doors?
It isn’t one of those twisty, unreliable-narrator thrillers where you’re constantly second-guessing yourself. It’s direct and propulsive – you just want to know what is going on and how is she going to handle the situation. I went in completely blind, and I think that’s the best way to experience it.
The Snack: Trader Joe’s Hot Honey Popcorn
Okay, here’s a confession: I’m allergic to popcorn. So I can’t actually eat this. But my husband and son are obsessed with it, and I did a little taste test just enough to confirm it’s buttery, movie-theater-style popcorn with a spicy kick at the finish.
And honestly? The pairing is too perfect to pass up:
The male main character in this book presents as the sweetest, most perfect gentleman on the outside… but has a lot of spice behind closed doors.
Sweet on the surface. Heat underneath. Sound familiar?
If you haven’t tried the Trader Joe’s Hot Honey Popcorn yet, go grab a bag. It’s the ideal companion for a thriller you’re going to devour in one sitting.
