A Novel and Nosh Pi Day Celebration

Life of Pi & Cardamom-Spiced Banana Hand Pies: A Novel & Nosh Pi Day Celebration
Yesterday, we celebrated Pi Day and not just the mathematical kind (3.14), but the flaky, warm, golden-brown kind too. Because what better way to honor both Pi and pie than by pairing a thoughtful novel with a homemade treat? Welcome back to Novel & Nosh, where we mix stories with snacks, books with bites, and always, a little something sweet on the side.
📖 Book Review: Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Let’s start with the book. Life of Pi is one of those stories that stays with you. It’s a survival tale, yes, but also a meditation on faith, resilience, and the blurred lines between truth and storytelling.
The story follows Pi Patel, the son of a zookeeper in India, whose family decides to emigrate to Canada. On their journey across the Pacific, the cargo ship sinks. Pi finds himself stranded in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. What unfolds is a rich, philosophical, often intense narrative about survival, imagination, and belief.
I gave this one four stars. It’s beautifully written and deeply layered, but I’ll admit, it left me wanting a book club-style chat. There’s so much to unpack, and I would love to hear others’ thoughts. (P.S. My daughter is reading it now, and we’re planning a movie night soon to compare versions!)
If you haven’t read Life of Pi yet, I highly recommend picking it up and if you have, let me know what you thought. I need someone to talk to about it!
🥧 Baking Inspired by the Book: Cardamom-Spiced Banana Hand Pies
Since Pi is from India, I wanted to bake something that incorporated warm, tropical flavors. Enter: Cardamom-Spiced Banana Hand Pies.
These cozy little pies are filled with mashed bananas, coconut milk, cardamom, and a touch of maple syrup wrapped in a flaky, cinnamon-kissed crust. They’re easy to make, perfect for sharing, and remind me that, like Pi’s journey, baking isn’t always predictable. (Yes, I overfilled a few… yes, they still tasted amazing.)
Here’s how to make them:
Cardamom Spiced Banana Hand Pies
Ingredients
- For the crust:
- 1¼ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3–4 tbsp ice water
- For the filling:
- 2 ripe bananas, mashed
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 2 tbsp coconut milk
- ½ tsp cardamom
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- For the glaze:
- ¼ cup powdered sugar
- 1–2 tbsp coconut milk
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
1️⃣ Make the Dough:Whisk together flour, salt, sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly. Add ice water gradually until the dough comes together. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
2️⃣ Prepare the Filling:Mash the bananas and mix in maple syrup, coconut milk, cardamom, vanilla, and salt. Set aside.
3️⃣ Assemble the Pies:Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out chilled dough to ⅛ inch thickness. Cut into circles (4–5 inches). Spoon filling onto half of each circle. Fold, crimp with a fork, and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush with coconut milk.
4️⃣ Bake:Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden. Let cool slightly.
5️⃣ Glaze & Serve:Whisk glaze ingredients together and drizzle over warm pies. Enjoy warm!

📚 Cookbook Feature: Pie Is Messy by Rebecca Grasley
If baking has your heart, Pie Is Messy is a cookbook worth checking out. Created by Rebecca Grasley of The Pie Hole bakery in California, it celebrates the idea that life and pie is rarely perfect, but always worth savoring.
I love that this book includes both “old school” classics like cherry and custard pies and “new school” twists like candied lemon chest pie. The layout, the storytelling, and the recipe variety are all deliciously inspiring. If I hadn’t already made my hand pies, I would’ve gone straight for her Cardamom Lemon Meringue Pie. Yum.
🥧 Life Lessons from Pie
Like Life of Pi teaches us, sometimes we have to accept uncertainty. Things won’t always go as planned; your crust might crack, your filling might bubble over, but there’s beauty (and flavor) in the imperfections.
So even if you missed Pi Day, it’s not too late. Read a good book. Bake something messy. And remember life, like pie, doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful.
If you try the recipe, let me know! I’d love to hear how your hand pies turn out.
Happy (Belated) Pi Day!
With stories and sprinkles,
