January was all about cozy, atmospheric reads—stories of survival, community, and comfort. And what better way to wrap up the month than with a hearty meal and a warm drink? In this post, I’m sharing my January reading wrap-up, featuring books that pulled me in with their immersive storytelling, alongside the perfect comfort food pairing: a homemade shepherd’s pie and a spiced chai latte!

🍵🥧 Recipe Pairing

Since The Wolves of Winter is all about survival in the cold, I’m making a hearty shepherd’s pie—the ultimate winter comfort food. And to balance it out, we’ll cozy up with a gingerbread spiced chai latte, a warm and fragrant drink perfect for curling up with a good book.

Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

For the Potatoes:

  • 1-2 tbsp salted water
  • 5 large red potatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/3 cup cheddar cheese

Beef Mixture:

  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 large carrot, chopped
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

Instructions:

  1. Fill a pot with water and 1-2 tbsp salt. Bring to a boil and add chopped potatoes. Boil for 20-25 minutes until fork-tender.
  2. While potatoes cook, heat an oven-safe skillet or cast iron pan with avocado oil. Add ground beef, crumble, and cook until no longer pink.
  3. Add chopped onion to the beef and cook until softened. Then, add carrot and celery.
  4. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in tomato paste.
  5. Sprinkle in flour and mix until no raw flour is visible.
  6. Add beef broth and stir until thickened.
  7. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and heavy cream. Remove from heat.
  8. Drain the potatoes and place them back in the hot pot. Add butter and let it melt.
  9. Stir in sour cream, milk, salt, and pepper. Mash until creamy.
  10. Spoon mashed potatoes over the beef mixture and spread evenly.
  11. Top with cheddar cheese and bake for 7-10 minutes at 350°F.

☕ Gingerbread Chai Latte (Easy Version)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 1 black tea bag (or loose-leaf black tea)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tsp cardamom
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tbsp molasses
  • 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Heat milk in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add tea bag and spices, stirring gently.
  3. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove tea bag.
  4. Stir in molasses, brown sugar, and vanilla.
  5. Pour into a mug and sprinkle cinnamon on top!
