A Cozy Christmas Bucket List for a Slow, Joyful Season

Cozy Christmas Bucket List title with a christmas cookie and lights in the background

There’s something about winter that invites us to slow down. The world may feel rushed, loud, and overscheduled, but the holidays whisper a different invitation if you are willing to listen. One of warmth, wonder, and cozy connection. I created this Cozy Christmas Bucket List filled with simple, soul-settling ways to savor the season. Think soft blankets, fresh bread, twinkling lights, peppermint treats, and quiet moments that remind you what this time of year is really about.

If you’re craving a slower Christmas, one rooted in presence rather than pressure, this cozy Christmas bucket list is for you.

a list of 12 things to do for christmas

1. Read a Christmas Book

Nothing sets the tone for the season like a festive read. Whether you curl up with a nostalgic classic or a cheerful holiday romance, a Christmas book is the perfect way to slip into someone else’s cozy world while you create your own. Pair it with a mug of something warm, and you’ve already checked off your first bucket-list moment.

2. Look at Christmas Lights

Bundle up, grab a friend or family member, and take a slow walk (or drive) to admire the lights. There’s something magical about seeing neighborhoods glow, like everyone collectively agreeing to make the world sparkle for a few weeks. In our local community we have a neighborhood that the town drives through because every house is decorated. Our family always makes an evening of it; the kids bring a friend, we head out for pizza, drive through the neighborhood and end of the evening back at the house for hot chocolate and games.

3. Enjoy a Hot Chocolate Walk

This one is simple but so good. Fill your favorite travel mug with hot chocolate, step outside, and let the cold air meet the warm cup in your hands. Extra cozy points for homemade cocoa or adding a peppermint stir stick.

4. Make a Peppermint Goodie

Peppermint feels like the official scent and flavor of December. Make a peppermint bark, homemade candies, or even peppermint fudge. It’s festive, fun, and gives you something delicious to share.

5. Decorate a Gingerbread House

Whether you go full architecture-mode or stick to a simple kit, decorating a gingerbread house is an instant mood booster. It’s whimsical, messy, and best done with laughter (and icing everywhere, if we’re honest).

6. Support a Small Business

One of the coziest things we can do is shop with intention. Visit a local boutique, holiday market, or small bakery. Support the makers, bakers, and hobby-turned-business owners who pour heart into what they do.

7. Snuggle Up with a Christmas Movie

There’s no shortage of Christmas movies, which is part of the charm. Choose a classic, grab a blanket, and let yourself melt into the soft glow of a story you’ve already seen a dozen times and still love. Some of my favorites are Elf, A Christmas Story, the Holiday, and the Netflix original Dash & Lily.

8. Make a Fun Winter Craft

Crafting slows us down in the best way. Try a homemade ornament, a simple paper craft, or something nature-inspired like dried orange slices. It doesn’t have to be perfect just fun, tactile, and seasonal.

9. Make Some Christmas Cookies

From gingerbread to sugar cookies to family recipes passed down through generations, baking is one of the greatest holiday rituals. The smell alone can transform your whole home into something warm and nostalgic.

10. Have a Family Game Night

Put the phones away, bring out a board or card game, and enjoy being together without distractions. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, just a night of connection and laughter.

11. Bake Bread for a Friend

Bread is comfort in edible form. Baking a loaf for someone else is the season’s warmth embodied. It’s simple generosity… and it tastes amazing.

12. Enjoy a Healthy Winter Soup

Amid all the sweets, cookies, and celebrations, your body will love you for a nourishing, warm bowl of soup. Bonus points if you simmer it while listening to Christmas music or reading your holiday book.

A Season of Cozy Possibilities

This cozy Christmas bucket list isn’t about doing all the things it’s about choosing the ones that help you slow down, savor the moment, and feel grounded in what matters. Cozy living is seasonal living: noticing, connecting, and creating warmth in little pockets of your day.

If you try any of these, tag me or share it inside the Novel & Nosh community. I love seeing how you bring the cozy into your own corners of life.

Here’s to a slower, softer, more joyful Christmas.
