Taking the next Step in Life

Standing at the Threshold: Taking the Next Step Without the Whole Playbook
Novel and Nosh exists to collect and share experiences and stories that nourish across seasons, tables, and lives. Today feels like one of those moments worth naming; the quiet, uncomfortable, holy-in-its-own-way space of standing on a threshold.
I’m in between who I was and who I am becoming.
And if you’re here reading this, there’s a good chance you might be too.
The In-Between Space
There’s a particular kind of tension that shows up when you know something needs to change, but you can’t yet see the full shape of what’s next. For me, that tension has looked like stress, anxiety, and a lot of overanalyzing. A constant urge to sit down and create the entire playbook for the next five years so I know exactly what steps to take and when.
Maybe you know this feeling.
You feel led toward something different, but fear creeps in. Not because you don’t want the change, but because you want certainty before you move. You want proof. A map. Reassurance that you’re doing it “right.”
This is safety. This is our mind and body trying to protect us.
And that’s important to name because feeling this way doesn’t mean you’re on the wrong path. It simply means you’re human.
When Overthinking Becomes a Detour
If you’re anything like me, your mind can get very convincing.
I can’t do this because of that.
This obstacle must be a sign I’m not supposed to move forward.
If I don’t have it all figured out, maybe I should just stay put.
Overthinking has a way of disguising itself as wisdom, when in reality, it often keeps us frozen. Safe, but stagnant.
Recently, after spiraling through questions about what Novel and Nosh should become, I did what many of us do: I looked for answers outside myself. I tried to systematize meaning. I even pulled AI into the process, hoping it might reflect something back to me that felt definitive.
And instead, I was reminded of something simple and grounding:
We are not meant to outsource our knowing.
We are meant to live.
The Next Step Is Enough
Later that day, I read something that stopped me in my tracks. It spoke directly into the mental loop I’d been stuck in:
“Making decisions is hard. When we attempt to make the perfect decision, we can often find ourselves stuck in indecision.”
It went on to explain that while discernment matters, we often overcomplicate what doesn’t need to be complicated.
The verse that followed was 1 Corinthians 10:31:
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
What struck me wasn’t the pressure of doing things perfectly, but the permission to do things simply.
You don’t need the full plan, all the answers. All you need is the next step!
When you move forward with intention, with kindness, love, grace, and gratitude, doors open. Opportunities appear. Clarity unfolds in its own time.
Not before you move.
But because you move.
Letting the Path Reveal Itself
I don’t have Novel and Nosh fully mapped out.
I have a sense. A direction. A quiet pull toward sharing experiences where books, food, and everyday living intersect especially in this season of life.
For now, that’s enough.
Each week, I’m choosing to speak about what feels true and alive in my heart. To trust that showing up honestly is more important than having it all figured out.
If you’re also standing on a threshold unsure, curious and a little scared, I hope this reminds you that you’re allowed to begin before you’re ready.
You’re allowed to take the next step without knowing the whole story.
