The Sweetest Getaway: A Conversation with Author Sasha Preston

I recently had the joy of chatting with author Sasha Preston about her latest book, The Sweetest Getaway a witty, adventurous story that blends female friendship, bold risk-taking, and a surprising amount of delicious food.
As soon as I picked up the book, I could tell this was something special. It’s part heist, part heartwarming story, and all about finding joy, adventure, and courage in unexpected places.
Meet Sasha Preston
Sasha lives in Southern California and writes what she calls “women’s fiction crime capers.” Her goal? To help women escape the ordinary, rediscover play, and feel inspired to take more risks in their everyday lives.
“I want women to feel a sense of adventure and playful joy,” she told me. “It’s about inspiring women to be a little bolder and have fun with it.”
About The Sweetest Getaway
The story follows Jennifer, a creative rule-follower who’s never broken a law in her life. She dreams of running her own business but rarely takes risks until her free-spirited roommate, Nari, pulls her into a daring heist against a not-so-innocent corporation.
One adventure leads to another, and soon the two women are planning a second, even more complex job with help from new (and equally bold) friends. The result is an energetic mix of humor, heart, and female empowerment all wrapped in a fast-paced, food-filled plot.
A Story Sprinkled with Flavor
One of my favorite things about The Sweetest Getaway is how much food is woven into the story. From Thai takeout to white chocolate macadamia nut cookies that “taste like freedom,” every page seems to celebrate connection and culture through food.
Sasha says this wasn’t intentional it just came naturally.
“Food is such an important point of connection between people,” she explained. “It’s how we share our traditions, celebrate, and experience joy together.”
Her prequel, A Sweet Scheme, follows one of the supporting characters, Martha, who runs a mango mocktail business, and yes, that one’s full of flavor too.
Writing with Adventure (and Heart)
Sasha’s path to writing fiction began with a simple creative exercise, exchanging short stories with a friend each week. That playful practice rekindled a passion for storytelling she hadn’t explored since childhood.
“I started writing on my lunch breaks, on my phone while walking, anywhere I could,” she said. “The creative spark came back, and I couldn’t stop.”
Her writing process now balances creativity and structure a mix of outline and intuition. And while her stories are fictional, her characters often reflect pieces of her own experiences and the women around her.
“Women’s entrepreneurship is a huge theme,” she shared. “All the main characters are entrepreneurial in some way they take risks, innovate, and build something new.”
The Power of Novelty and Friendship
Our conversation circled back to something that feels especially relevant in midlife, the importance of novelty and living fully.
Sasha believes novelty is key to growth and joy:
“As we get older, life can start to blur together. Seeking new and different experiences, even small ones, slows time down in the best way. It helps you feel more alive.”
She also emphasizes the value of female friendship as a source of adventure.
“That bond between women is so special,” she said. “Doing fun, creative things together (writing, cooking, painting) brings joy and connection into everyday life.”
And I couldn’t agree more. Experiences don’t have to be extravagant or expensive to be meaningful. Sometimes the richest moments come from small acts of creativity; baking something new, writing with a friend, or trying a simple recipe together.
Sasha’s Go-To Snack
Speaking of recipes, Sasha’s favorite quick treat is a fruit smoothie with a secret ingredient: silken tofu.
“It makes it creamy, adds protein, and gives it a custard-like texture,” she said. “You can change up the fruits depending on your mood.”

Final Thoughts
My conversation with Sasha reminded me that living with novelty doesn’t mean chasing extremes it’s about inviting curiosity, creativity, and connection into everyday life. Whether it’s through a good story, a shared meal, or a playful new project, those small moments are what make life feel rich and full.
The Sweetest Getaway is exactly that kind of story lighthearted yet inspiring, adventurous yet deeply cozy. Perfect for curling up with a snack and a warm drink.
